Tropical Storm 11 - A Modern Romeo And Juliet Love Story

Rosie's was a small nipa hut home, with a large neglected garden. Rosie and her family were all sitting outside in the shade when she saw Juliet and Janie approaching. Excited to see her friends, Rosie ran across to the front gate to greet them.

As the two girls stepped inside, Rosie threw her arms around Juliet: "Happy birthday, Juliet."

She then looked at Janie: "You next."

The three of them walked towards the rest of Rosie's family, who had all been looking on smiling. As they did so, Romeo came out of the house, and went straight over to Juliet and Janie. He already knew it was Juliet's birthday, but she was surprised when he approached her first.

"Happy birthday, Juliet," he greeted. Unexpectedly, as they reached out to shake hands, he also leant forward to kiss her on the cheek. Juliet instinctively offered first one cheek then the other, feeling hesitant, but not appearing so to those who were watching and giving out a little cheer to each kiss.

As they broke away from each other, their hands lingered together, but Janie was already trying to emphasise her presence.

Laughing, she said to Romeo: "Hey, where's mine?"

Romeo smiled at her, but did not release Juliet's hand; neither did she try to release his.

"I thought your birthday was in two days?" he remarked.

"But you'll be in Manila," she responded, stretching her arms out around his neck.

Romeo released Juliet's hand and accepted Janie's embrace, obliging with a kiss to each of her cheeks too, accompanied by further cheers from Rosie's family. Janie's embrace was slow to unwrap, and she clung on to his arm as they joined the others. Rosie's mother and little brother found plastic stools for the visitors to sit on.

Rosie's mother quickly had the group singing "Happy Birthday" to Juliet, and she happily looked around at each one individually as if to thank them. When her eyes reached Romeo, she found he too was singing. However, it was not his mouth upon which she focussed, but the deep brown eyes. Their eyes locked for a moment before the song finished, but as the singing stopped Juliet unlocked them and smiled broadly to everyone.

The two birthday celebrants only stayed a short while. They left, assured that Rosie and Romeo were coming to the party, with perhaps the rest of the family coming along too. Now all the invited guests had been reminded, so Juliet and Janie set off for the beach to see how the preparations had gone for the party.
