Tropical Storm 2 - A Modern Romeo And Juliet Love Story
There had been no hint of things to come six months before. On the same beach, sitting with a friend, Janie, just a few metres from where she was now, there was nothing but the usual chattering banter of two teenage Filipinas. Juliet had known nothing but fun, enjoyment and happiness on that beach, and that day six months earlier was no different.
Juliet was not quite 16 years old then, but a statuesque beauty nonetheless. She had not ever had a boyfriend, and had no real inclination to get involved with a boy. Her eldest sister, Mary, was 25 now, and she too had never had a boyfriend; never had love and romance in her life. Mary was happy, so there was no reason why Juliet should be any different.
Juliet had quite a few friends who were boys, but they knew there were boundaries that could not be breached. Mostly, they were overawed not just by Juliet's Mistiza beauty, but by the comparative wealth of her family. Those boys who were at all adventurous, expressing any sort of romantic affection towards Juliet, were dealt with by her with a deft touch, and her "don't be so silly" smile which dashed them down in an instant, never to try again.
The boys she was friendly with were all from very poor nipa hut homes. That mattered not to her. She liked them as they were, and did not care about their families' stature or homes. There was just no romance, no feelings other than typical Filipino friendship.
Juliet and Janie were busily discussing a beach party for their birthdays, which were within two days of each other in September, when Janie gave Juliet a sharp nudge with her elbow. Juliet gasped with the sudden jolt, as Janie nodded towards her left, where a young man had just emerged from the trees and was now walking away from them.
Janie just giggled excitedly.
"Who was thaaaaat?" she said. It was more of an exclamation than a question, as she knew that Juliet would not know. They had never seen him before.
