Tropical Storm 6 - A Modern Romeo And Juliet Love Story
When Juliet shook Romeo's hand, it was a moment she wanted both to end in an instant, and to go on forever. Her normal confidence, which some misinterpreted as aloofness, had vanished and left in its place, momentarily, an empty shell of a beautiful girl not knowing what to say or how to react.
As he left his hand on hers and squeezed it gently, Juliet felt a tingling sensation she had never before experienced. The electrical wave that pulsed through her body finally switched on a smile as she was forced to look into Romeo's eyes.
It seemed an eternal moment, but the others, apart from Romeo, scarcely noticed. To them it was a brief hand shake, and as far as they knew, it was Janie who had an erupting interest in Romeo, and not Juliet smouldering within like a dormant volcano.
"Hello, Juliet," Romeo said quietly. "I'm sorry they tease you about my name. Just call me Romy."
"Oh, that's ok," Juliet replied, reluctantly letting go of his hand and trying to shake off the effect of his touch.
"Are you coming in for a swim?" Rosie asked, a question directed at nobody in particular.
Janie pounced with her reply before Juliet and Luke had a chance to respond. She was wearing jeans and t-shirt, but there was no doubt she was ready to dive straight in, and took hold of Rosie's hand, then Romeo's arm.
They were ready to walk into the sea, but Juliet was transfixed by an uncharacteristic shyness. She was wearing shorts, so was better suited to swimming than Janie, but as Janie looked at her to see what she would do, Juliet shook her head gently.
Luke was ready to join Rosie, Janie and Romeo in the sea, but as he observed Juliet's reluctance he decided to stay on the beach and keep Juliet company. They walked to the back of the beach and sat in the shade of a palm.
"Why are you not swimming Luke?" asked Juliet, "I know you're crazy for swimming."
"The sea's always here, and you're alone," said Luke. Juliet smiled warmly at him, and they held hands as they watched their friends run into the sea.
Juliet sensed Luke observing her, then he asked:
"What about you? You like swimming? What's wrong Juliet?"
The question puzzled her. As she watched Janie splashing playfully with Romeo, she really did not know what had held her back. She loved the sea, and she loved swimming. Had Romeo not been there, she would, for sure, have dived in without hesitation, regardless of what she were wearing.
However, Romeo was there. In reply to Luke, she just shrugged her shoulders, and continued watching her friends in the sea. In reply to herself, she had no answer. At least, no answer she was willing to acknowledge.
Luke looked at her inquisitively, and said sensitively: "You're shy of Romeo?"
Luke squeezed her hand, and they both fell silent as they watched the playful trio in the sea. ![]()
