Tropical Storm 9 - A Modern Romeo And Juliet Love Story

As Romeo reached them, he handed his pants to Rosie without a word, and he put his t-shirt back on. Janie watched him closely, and by the time his head emerged, she was ready with a big smile.

Janie looked questioningly at Juliet, who was now looking at Romeo's eyes but averted them as soon as she sensed Janie looking at her.

Without actually asking Juliet any question, Janie turned to Romeo.

"Do you want to come to our birthday party?" she asked.

"Of course, thank you," he immediately replied, then adding: "You said 'our' birthday party?"

Janie took hold of Juliet's hand, and went on:

"Yes, Juliet and I both have birthdays in a few days."

Romeo now looked directly at Juliet. She truly was a beautiful girl, but somehow elusive. He guessed that she was just a quiet and shy person, although a question to his cousin later would tell him that was not so.

"Aah, both of you. That's nice," he said, smiling at Juliet in a subdued fashion, perhaps mirroring her own enigmatic smile. His smile became far more open and free as he looked back to Janie.

"But when is it?" he added. "I have to go to Manila Sunday. I'll be there until Christmas."

Janie and Juliet looked at each other, both experiencing different forms of disappointment at the news.

At last, Juliet spoke to him in reply, before Janie:

"It's Sunday," she told him. "Here on the beach."

She nodded her head towards a spot about 50 metres along.

"We'll be setting up along there," she added, by now absorbed in searching Romeo's eyes from a metre away.

"Don't worry, you'll hear us?" Janie laughed. "In fact, everyone in Port Barton will hear us."

Romeo laughed briefly too before turning to Rosie. Janie quickly chipped in:

"Rosie's coming," she told Romeo.

He seemed genuinely pleased to be invited, and responded:

"Ok, that's nice, I'll look forward to that," nodding as he looked at Rosie, and then Janie and Juliet.

Luke was just standing there quietly, but Romeo did not ignore him.

"Are you coming?" he asked Luke.

Luke was now exuberant as he thought of the party, and started laughing. Juliet understood why, but said nothing.

"Oh, yes," said Luke, "I'll be there. Won't I girls?"

He was sharing a secret with Juliet, but couldn't contain himself completely.

"I hope you recognize me, Romeo," he laughed.

Romeo appeared puzzled. Juliet looked at him, and said:

"You will," and then exhanged glances with both Luke and Janie before continuing: "Luke doesn't always dress like this."

Luke then set off on his supermodel strut, with swinging hips and hand drooping limply from his raised wrist.

Juliet and Janie collapsed in laughter, holding onto each other, while Rosie waited to see Romeo's reaction before joining in.

Romeo laughed too once he had realised what it was about.

"Luke asked to borrow one of my dresses for the party," Juliet told the others.

Janie looked at Juliet, faking annoyance as she held Juliet's arm and said:

"Hey, that's not fair, Juliet."

Luke was just arriving back from his display, so Janie challenged him.

"Luke, it's a joint party. You can't wear Juliet's dress," she joked.

Juliet knew what was coming, and was not surprised when Janie said:

"You must wear half and half. My top and Juliet's skirt."

Romeo was a bit surprised by the relaxed and open nature of what to him was a bizarre discussion; to the others, it was every day normality.

Juliet chimed in: "Okay Luke. You come round to my house later, you can choose a skirt."

Janie added: "Then we'll take you to my house and we'll choose a matching top."

Luke was delighted, and took hold of the girls' arms.

Romeo and Rosie were now ready to return to Rosie's home.

"Okay," Romeo smiled, "I'll see you at the party."

Rosie gave a little wave, as they both turned and walked between the trees and out of sight.
