Valentine Cards

Valentine cards are very much a commercial aspect of Valentine's Day, especially in some countries. A few years ago statistics showed men in England sent more Valentine's cards than men in other countries. Does that mean English men are more romantic than all others? I doubt that, given that it was, reputedly, English men who came up with the idea of a single red rose.

No doubt the balance of romanticusm lies somewhere between the two. However, the proliferation of Valentine's Day cards being sent by men in England is, I believe, down to good marketing rather than any superior romanticism amongst the English, and I say that as an ex-pat Englishmen.

Valentine's Day cards, though, whether commercial or not, do propagate the association between the Valentine celebration and the passing of romantic notes of love. So, for that reason, they are an integral part of Valentine's Day. As for the single red rose, I have no idea why that should be more romantic than a dozen or a thousand red roses. It does seem a bit stingy, but if the lady's happy with that, then what does it matter?

It is not common practice here in the Philippines to send Valentine's cards, although there is usually a small collection in the shops. That is certainly not because of the lack of romanticism amongst Filipinos; far from it. As I say elsewhere on this web site, they are a romantic lot. In most parts of the country, there is insufficient money to justify massive marketing campaigns for Valentine's cards. However, further to that, it has just never become a habit. filipinos are happy with cell phone text messages and all the very clever graphics that circulate in the weeks before Valentine's Day.

There is a massive choice of free online Valentine's Day Ecards to choose from, and I make no particular recommendation; other than it is much more romantic to spend some time in the stores choosing the most appropriately worded, romantic card for your love. That is, if you want to be taken at all seriously.
